On Friday, September 21, 2018, Stone Temple Pilots stopped in Oklahoma City for a performance at the Diamond Ballroom. Music fans in OKC have always loved the band and their music, which has remained in constant rotation on rock radio stations. People who attended Rocklahoma over Memorial Day Weekend already witnessed Stone Temple Pilots perform with new frontman Jeff Gutt. Those who have not seen Gutt perform with STP eagerly waited to see what he brings to the band.
The evening’s entertainment started when The Dirty Hooks took the stage. The Las Vegas trio’s music incorporates gritty garage rock, blusey basslines and harmonizing vocals. Jenine Cali is an extremely talented drummer with a beautifully haunting voice. Cali and bassist/vocalist Bobby McCall complement each other by creating a deep, blusey, hard driving rhythm along with their vocal harmonies. Guitarist Anthony Ratto plays off of Cali and McCall, delivering searing guitar solos and adding textures to the rhythm, creating The Dirty Hooks’ sound.

The band has released two albums, Electric Grit in 2012 and the 2018 EP Kiss the Devil and Run; both of which contain fantastic songs like “Naked City Colt”, “Moonshine Husle”, and “Cicada Tree” from Electric Grit, and “Midnight Runaway” and “Lie Down” from Kiss the Devil and Run. The Dirty Hooks proved to be an excellent opening act for Stone Temple Pilots.
When Jeff Gutt joined Stone Temple Pilots in November 2017, expectations were high. He was chosen to join music icons Dean DeLeo, Robert DeLeo and Eric Kretz, who have continued to produce hit after hit since the bands 1992 album Core blew up the rock charts. Gutt was not brought into the band to act as a proxy for former frontman Scott Weiland, which the band proved with their self-titled 2018 release. The album has already produced a hit with the first single “Meadow”; a song that reached the top ten on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Songs chart.
Gutt owns the stage, he has an inherent charisma that demands attention. He knows how to use his strong stage presence to captivate the audience, and this is all before he even grabs the microphone and starts singing. With Gutt on vocals, Stone Temple Pilots sound fantastic. Dean DeLeo showcased his melodic sophistication with rich guitar textures. Robert DeLeo continues to be one of the best bassists in rock music today. His eloquent rhythms, exciting grooves and range of melodies help create the signature Stone Temple Pilots sound. Drummer Eric Kretz adds personality and groove to the music, keeping everything clean and tight. The DeLeo brothers and Kretz are the original core of the band and Gutt adds a new dynamic to the music, however, it sounds like a natural evolution for Stone Temple Pilots, a style that fans have embraced for nearly three decades.
During the show in Oklahoma City, the band performed classics such as, “Vasoline”, “Wicked Garden”, “Interstate Love Song” and “Sex Type Thing”, along with songs from the new album, including “Meadow” and “Roll Me Under”. Oklahoma City fans sang along with old favorites and the new song “Meadow”, which has been played regularly on rock radio stations in the area. Stone Temple Pilots continue to deliver amazing live performances and produce great rock music.
