On Monday, December 10, 2018, KMOD presented the first annual “The Nutrocker: A Christmas Concert” at the Brady Theater in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Performing at the event was headliner In This Momen, and New Years Day provided opening support. The stop in Tulsa was part of a larger fall tour that included co-headliners Halestorm, In This Moment and New Years Day; Halestorm was not a part of the show at the Brady Theater.

New Years Day walked out onto a stage flooded with deep, blood red lighting. Frontwoman Ash Costello yelled, “Tulsa, show us a good fucking time”, before breaking into the opening song “Kill or Be Killed” from the bands 2015 album Malevolence. Costello is a strong frontwoman and commands the crowd’s attention with her constant engagement and calls for the audience to sing along. Fans did just that when New Years Day broke into their second song, a cover of Pantera’s “Fucking Hostile”.
The energy was high throughout the set, at one point during the performance, Costello said, “we require a lot of crowd participation because I’m like Tinkerbell, I require all your attention or I’ll go crazy.” Costello’s approach to rock is much like those of her recent tour mates. She doesn’t resort to screaming and growling in an attempt to mimic the boys; instead, much like Lzzy Hale and Maria Brink, Costello uses her powerful vocal range to great effect and reserves the growling and screaming for moments in a song that requiring a more emotional impact.
During the forty-five minute set at the Brady Theater, New Years Day performed several songs from their most recent album, Malevolence, including “I’m About to Break You”, “Scream” and “Defame Me”. Other songs performed were “Epidemic” off the 2014 EP of the same name, and the new single “Skeletons”.
A white curtain with a black widow draped the stage prior to In This Moment’s performance. Before the band took the stage, Queen’s “We Will Rock You” followed by Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing” was played over the PA system. After the intro songs finished playing, special effects was used to provide lightning flashes behind the white curtain. As soon as the curtain dropped, the band launched into the title track from the bands fourth studio album, “Blood”. Fans immediately started singing along.

Maria Brink was mesmerizing on stage and had multiple costume changes throughout the performance. The effects In This Moment uses in their stage show, including costume and set changes, fog machines, wind machines and dramatic lighting, are visually stunning and helps to create atmosphere that compliments each song on the setlist. Brink is one of the hardest working women in the metal and hard rock community. Along with her band, she always puts on a spectacular performance.
During the hour long set, In This Moment performed several songs off their 2017 album Ritual, including “River of Fire”, “Roots”, “Oh Lord” and their cover of Phil Collins “In the Air Tonight”. The band also performed “Big Bad Wolf” from the 2014 album Black Widow, along with “Adrenalize” and “Whore” from the album Blood. “Whore” was performed as an encore.
New Years Day was a fantastic compliment to In This Moment and got the crowd engaged in the show early on. As always, In This Moment delivered another amazing performance. The KMOD DJs emceeing the concert hinted at an appearance from both New Years Day and In This Moment at Rocklahoma 2019. With the recent release of the Rocklahoma 2019 lineup, it was confirmed that both bands will in fact perform at the Memorial Weekend festival in Pryor, Oklahoma.
